The Beginner Optimist program is an introductory sailing class for children ages 6-10; it is HIGHLY recommended that sailors have completed Kindergarten. During this class, your sailor will learn the basic skills needed to be a successful sailor-- how to be safe and comfortable around the water, how to be properly prepared for sailing each day, how to rig, de-rig, and care for their boats and equipment, along with gaining a new set of on-the-water skills each day. Sailors do not need to own a boat to participate in this class. If your sailor has previously taken Beginning Opti, and you would like to learn about the next steps, visit our Opti Step 2 page.

*Sailors do NOT need a boat for this class. All equipment is provided*

PARTS OF THE BOAT

*Use this image to familiarize yourself and your sailor with the parts of the boat. By the end of beginner optimist class, sailors will know the names of these parts as well as their function.
