Lots of thanks to Chicago Yacht Club for hosting a fun & successful MISSA Qualifier!
Rain on Saturday morning brought us a stiff northerly on Lake Michigan, and a valiant effort was made to set a course outside Belmont Harbor, but with 6-8’ waves, and even more chop reverberating from the shore, Safety committee made the wise decision to send boats back into the harbor for the day.
Courses were quickly set despite oscillating breeze, and racing began in earnest ~10.30am. Courses were W6 most of the day, and with races easily viewable from shore/docks, it was an exciting day to watch. Breeze favored the left side of the course, which meant that lots of boats were attempting port lay.
With scores up and down on Saturday, Kettle Moraine sailors Christian & Sam Spencer (A Fleet); Alex Keck, Paul McClean & Breanna Schultz (B Fleet) both posted top 5 finishes, and finished the day top 10 overall.
Sunday began with more rain, and more racing inside the harbor. Despite a lighter easterly, the swell and chop on the lake remained too large for practical racing. Racing continued on W6 courses, with an interesting, and rare breeze pattern that favored the middle of the course, with wind slipping between breakwaters.
With scores up and down again on Sunday, Kettle Moraine continued to post high, top-5 finishes, and with everything on the line in the last races of B-Fleet, KM pulled out top-3 finishes, and and edged out St. Ignatius to place 3rd, and Qualify for Mallory Double-Handed Nationals in Boston.
Nationals will be Hosted by MIT May 12th-14th in Boston, MA.
Congrats to all the Sailors who Qualified!!
